JULLEY ! At an altitude of 12,400 feet above sea level lies a village (Mudh) at the end of the 2 major treks in Himachal Pradesh – Pin Parvati trek and Pin Bhaba trek.

This village, called Mudh (Mud) lies in one corner of the Spiti Valley and doesn’t attract much crowd, which has resulted this place to be quite virgin and remain untouched. Well, this is what makes it more beautiful and tranquil. The village is nestled by the side of the silver shining Pin river and houses approximately 200 people. Agricultural lands surround the village and the main occupation of locals is farming and animal husbandry. Visibly animals outnumber people. Locals say Snow Leopards often visit this place during the winter.

The houses are in Spitian style and the colorful Buddhist flags outside or on roof of every house affirms the Buddhist influence in this region. Walking ahead from the village we could see a glacier which has slipped down leading to a heavy waterstream. On reaching the village, one can notice the transition of mountain ranges in this area, which is quite colorful. Nature has painted this mountain range in Pin valley with various shades of green and mauve which makes this dreamy village stand out.

How to reach?

HRTC operates from Kaza and you can reach Mudh. With the growth of tourism in the Spiti valley, young men have chosen to be porters or guides for trekkers. This has also led to increasing number of guest houses/homestays in the village. Mudh remains under the snowline for about 4-5 months during winter, making it cut off from the world.

We took a walk around the village and were awestruck with the unmatched beauty. Few modern style guest houses have come up in this area. But personally, the experience of staying in local Spitian homestay will always entrall our memories. Quite famous in this village is the Tara guest house and restaurant. But, something unknown to many is that this restaurant serves one of the best Spitian Pizza with Yak cheese. Well to be honest, it was Sonam (owner of this restaurant) who offered us pizza. It was such an incredibly yummy dish. Also, thanks to our chauffeur, we got some frozen Yak cheese. The Yak cheese prepared by the family is for sale as well. Although it was a change in plan, that we ended up covering Mudh. But now we see that was a god given chance. We would have regretted all life if this hidden gem was missed.

With our heart filled with joy, colorful memories and good food, we continued our journey to other regions in the majestic Spiti Valley.
